In the last few decades, health science has witnessed increasing assistance from technology that has led to multidisciplinary research and innovations. In the current decade, health sciences benefitted from health informatics through wearable devices; further, in the coming decade, it will experience evidence-based preventive care with advantage of artificial intelligence (AI).

AI in health care is the use of complex software to estimate human insights in the analysis of complicated medical data. Similar to the learning process in children where a child learns to identify objects from a set of images/flashcards/pictures, etc., AI systems learn from humongous data to execute any intended task efficiently.

Consider a case study: AI in dentistry. Dentistry uses AI in solving different problems by utilizing complex algorithms, trained on medical data. For example, an AI system to detect the presence/absence of tooth decay is trained on meaningful patterns from X-rays, magnetic resonance imaging, radiographs, etc., Such systems are capable of detecting dental pathologies by reducing misdiagnosis rate. High accuracy in decision-making tasks and reduced overhead of manual repetitive tasks in real-time problems led to wide acceptance of AI systems.

In health care, AI is used in (1) disease identification, (2) maintaining smart electronic health records, prescribing personalized treatments, (3) new drug discovery, (4) prediction of epidemic outbreak, (5) clinical trial research, (6) radiology–radiotherapy, and so on [Figure 1]. AI is being used in different types of health-care startups as depicted in [Figure 1] that shows the distribution in the year 2017. Doctors are moving medicine toward easy detection and disease prevention with the assistance AI.

Here, it is worth mentioning collaborations between Google and Indian hospitals. Google is running a pilot at Aravind Eye Hospital in Madurai and planning a similar one at Sankara Nethralaya to grade photos of patients' retinas through AI. AI can be incorporated in academics by having AI-based coaching tools where each student receives customized insights and recommendations to help explore and pursue their career goals. For the reason that technologies can be disruptive, enterprise-wide investment is not typically seen in the classroom-centered initiatives. Health science academia can leverage the advantages of clinical data, domain expertise, and partner with AI R and D units to explore opportunities to benefit from AI. This course would make the academia future ready to serve the humanity in the decade of evidence-based preventive health care.
