Hookah/Water pipes/Sheesha have been banned in public places by the Indian government. The Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act 2003 (COTPA) restricts the sale of hookah in restaurant, bars, and pubs or any other public places, defined under this act.
Even in smoking area of restaurants, any apparatus facilitating smoking is banned. Hence, the people have come up with new modification of hookah, i.e., fruit/edible hookahs. Here, the base of the hookah is made from big fruits such as watermelon, pineapple, or coconut. The liquid medium may be water, caffeinated energy drinks, or alcohol as per the personal choice and the flavor may be tobacco based, fruit based, or herbal based.
These fruit hookahs can be made quickly and also dismantled easily. Probably, the whole purpose of this modification is to not get caught during the police raids. During the raids, done by the police in bars, restaurants, and pubs, these hookahs are easily dismantled and the fruit parts are thrown in the garbage. This is how violation of the rules on ban of sale of hookahs is taking place. Not only they are facilitating smoking, but also they are increasing the health risk of their other customers who are not smoking hookah.
Public Health Significance
Hookah exposes the person to more smoke than that of cigarette and also make them addicted to the nicotine-based products used in it. As the session for the hookah lasts from 20 to 80 min, a smoker/person can snuff around 50–200 puffs. A single snuff is equal to 100 cigarettes., Therefore, the hookah smoker may inhale more smoke and chances of addiction increases. Also, the liquid in the water pipe absorbs more smoke, so the health hazards related to it increases. Secondhand smoke also poses the health risk to the nonsmokers who are present in that premises.
